After fingerprints, keep the receipt called the resguardo and wait for the police station’s indicated period. In most provinces, you’ll book a separate collection appointment through the ICP portal. Practical waiting time is often 30 to 45 days. Collect the card yourself with your original passport, and take the old card for a renewal or duplicate.
When can you collect your TIE?
After your toma de huellas (fingerprints), the police officer gives you a resguardo (receipt). It confirms that you completed fingerprints and connects you to the card file.
In most provinces, you must book a separate cita previa (appointment) to collect the card. Use the official ICP appointment portal to check your province and collection offices.
Select the procedure for TIE collection. The exact option names vary by province, so don’t search for one fixed phrase. Some police stations allow collection without an appointment. Follow the officer’s instructions and check your resguardo.
There is no official guaranteed production time. In practice, many people wait roughly 30 to 45 days after fingerprints. This is a practical estimate, not a legal deadline or guaranteed right. The wait varies by province and police station.
If you’re applying for your first card, see our guide to applying for a TIE in Spain. For a new card after renewal, read our TIE renewal guide.
Steps to collect your TIE card
- Keep the receipt safe. Store your resguardo safely after the fingerprint appointment.
- Wait for the indicated period. Follow the date or waiting period written on the receipt. Use 30 to 45 days only as a practical guide.
- Book collection if needed. Use ICP to choose your province and the TIE collection procedure. Booking the appointment is free. Our immigration appointment guide can help.
- Go to the police station. Visit the station shown on your resguardo or appointment. Bring your receipt and original passport.
- Check the new card. Check your name, NIE, dates, photo, and other details before leaving the desk. Report any mistake immediately.
Documents to bring for TIE collection
Bring these items to the police station. The old card is handed in when the new card is issued.
- Original passport, to confirm your identity at the desk
- Resguardo, your proof from the fingerprint appointment
- Old TIE, if you still have it, for a renewal or duplicate
- Appointment details, if your province requires a collection appointment
- Proof of legal representation, if a representative collects for a minor or legally incapacitated person
Collection must be in person
The TIE is a personal document. You must collect it in person. A friend can’t collect it, even with written authorisation.
Only a legal representative can collect the card for a minor or legally incapacitated person. Bring the card holder’s original passport and the documents showing the legal representation.
For a renewal or duplicate, the police takes the old card when the new one is handed over. Check every detail before you leave. Ask the officer about any error straight away.
Travelling while your TIE is pending
If you need to leave Spain during a renewal or duplicate, ask for an autorización de regreso (return authorisation). This is a National Police document for leaving Spain and returning once while the process continues.
You apply in person with form EX-13 and the Modelo 790 code 012 fee. The document can be valid for a maximum of 90 days. It only covers re-entry through Spanish border posts.
If you return through another Schengen country, that country may require a visa. Check the official National Police information on the return authorisation before travelling.
Common problems and how to fix them
Card not ready yet
If the card isn’t ready on the indicated date, ask the police station for its next instruction. Production may still be pending. Don’t treat the practical 30 to 45 day estimate as a fixed date.
No collection slots
Keep checking the ICP portal. New appointments can appear later. The booking is free, so don’t pay an agent for a slot. If the officer said appointments aren’t needed, follow that instruction instead.
You lost the receipt
Take your original passport and explain what happened at the police station. The office can locate your file, but expect extra checks before collection.
Travel before collection
For a renewal or duplicate, apply in person for the autorización de regreso before travelling. Use form EX-13 and the Modelo 790 code 012 fee. It allows return through Spanish border posts only.
