New to Spanish bureaucracy? The basics in 30 seconds

What is a NIE?

Your foreigner identification number, the key to almost everything in Spain: signing a work contract, opening a bank account, paying tax, even claiming unemployment benefit from SEPE later on. It's usually the first thing to arrange.

What is empadronamiento?

Registering your address at the town hall. This free registration proves where you live, and many other procedures, from healthcare to residence cards, ask for the certificate it produces (the "padrón").

What is cita previa?

A free appointment you book before visiting almost any public office in Spain: the police for your NIE, SEPE for benefits, Social Security or your town hall. Without one, you'll usually be turned away.

You don't need perfect Spanish to get through this. We tell you exactly what to bring, what to click and what the forms mean. We're an independent guide: we explain each procedure in plain English and send you to the official website, where the actual paperwork happens. How we work.
