Your roadmap: support when you do not qualify for el paro
You have not contributed long enough for the full benefit, or your benefit ran out: this is the support that exists.
-
Register as a jobseeker first
Without the demanda de empleo there is no subsidy: it is the entry requirement for all support. It is done at your regional employment office and it is free.
-
Check the unemployment subsidy
The subsidy covers several cases: not enough contributions, benefit exhausted and others. Start here to see which case fits you and what you will be asked for.
You need first: step 1
-
With family to support: the family subsidy
If you support a partner or children and your income is low, the family subsidy may apply. Family responsibilities change both your entitlement and how long it lasts.
-
Aged 52 or over: the over-52 subsidy
This is the longest subsidy: it can run until retirement and it counts towards your pension. If you meet the age, check it before any other option.
-
Benefit exhausted: all your options
If your contributory benefit just ran out, this guide sorts your options by age, family situation and work history.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a subsidy if I never worked in Spain?
SEPE subsidies generally require some contribution period or an exhausted benefit. The unemployment subsidy guide goes through each case and its requirements one by one.
Do I have to renew anything while I receive a subsidy?
Yes: you must renew your jobseeker registration (sellar el paro) on the dates on your registration document. Forgetting it can suspend your payments, so set a reminder.
I was self-employed, can I claim anything?
Self-employed workers have their own protection (cese de actividad) if they paid for it. Depending on your situation the general subsidies may also apply; start with the jobseeker registration.
