From 3 August 2026, you can visit the Italian Consulate in Barcelona without an appointment during public opening hours. You can apply for either a passport or an Italian identity card (CIE), not both.

Does this apply to you?

You must be an Italian citizen, have turned 70, and be registered with AIRE for the Barcelona consular district. AIRE is Italy's register of citizens living abroad. You must have no valid ID, or your current ID must be close to expiry.

Which document can you apply for, and what should you bring?

Choose one document: a passport or a CIE. Bring all the required paperwork for that application, printed and completed. The administrative processing period starts when you submit the paperwork at the counter. The consulate's notice does not state the fee.

CIE cards requested after 30 July 2026 by Italians aged 70 or over have unlimited validity.

What should you do now?

  1. Open the consulate's official notice and find the checklist for your chosen document.
  2. Print and complete all the required paperwork before you go.
