What the consulate has published

The Italian Consulate General in Barcelona published a notice on 21 July 2026. The notice is about the campaign to replace the paper identity card with the new CIE (electronic identity card). More than 12,000 people have signed up for this campaign. More than half have already received their document.

Who this affects

This notice only affects people signed up for the CIE campaign. It is not a general rule for all consulate appointments. If you have an appointment for a passport, a visa, or another service, this notice does not change anything for you.

What the consulate asks you to do

If you are signed up for the CIE campaign, the consulate has sent you an email with instructions. Follow those instructions to confirm your appointment. If you cannot attend, cancel it with enough notice, following the same instructions in the email.

The consulate does not give a separate cancellation process. Everything happens through the email you received.

Why cancelling matters

When someone does not show up and does not cancel, that slot is lost. The consulate asks people to cancel in time, so someone else in the campaign can use that slot.
