Check for free, without a digital certificate, which stage your Spanish citizenship application is at: use the Ministry of Justice e-office with your NIE, the application number and year and your date of birth. See the steps and what to do after a year.
How to check your citizenship application step by step
The Ministry of Justice has an online status check for citizenship by residence applications (consulta telemática de expedientes de nacionalidad), which its own guides call «Cómo va lo mío» («how is my case going»). It is free and you do not need Cl@ve or a digital certificate. The page is in Spanish only.
- Have your details ready. You need your NIE, your date of birth and the number and year of your application. The number is a code like R500001/2015.
- Open the status check.
Press the red button. The Ministry of Justice page opens with the form «Datos de la solicitud» (application details).
- Fill in your details. Complete the boxes «NIE», «Número» (number), «Año» (year) and «Fecha nacimiento» (date of birth). In «Número», type your number as the example on the screen shows.
- Tick «No soy un robot» (I'm not a robot). Follow the instructions and press «Verificar» (verify).
- Press «Enviar» (send). The screen shows which stage your application has reached.
Is your case an immigration one, such as a residence permit or a TIE? That uses a different system: see how to check an immigration application.

What the status check tells you and what it does not
- It tells you which stage of the process your application is at.
- It is not a notification. The Ministry says so on the page itself. Requests for documents and the decision reach you as a notification.
- If you are granted citizenship and the grant has been notified, you can download the electronic original of the decision there.
There is no official list that explains each stage or how long it lasts.
How long it takes and what to do after a year
The Ministry has one year to decide and notify you. The year starts when your application reaches the Directorate-General that handles it.
If you are asked for documents (a requerimiento), you have three months to hand them in. If you do not reply, your application is treated as withdrawn and closed. While you reply, the one-year deadline can be paused.
If the year passes with no answer, the application is deemed refused: this is called negative silence (silencio negativo). You can keep waiting for the decision or appeal. See what to do if your application is refused to learn how to appeal.

Contact a lawyerNotifications arrive in DEHú: check it
DEHú (Dirección Electrónica Habilitada única) is the public administration's electronic notification inbox. If your application uses electronic notification, requests for documents and the decision arrive there.
- Log in to DEHú.
Press the red button and then «Acceder» (access). Choose one of the identification methods on the screen.
- Look at your notifications. Close the notice with the green «X». Below you will see «Notificaciones pendientes» (pending) and «Notificaciones realizadas» (completed).
- Open the notification. Accept it and download the document: it is the decision or the request for documents.
If you do not open a notification, it counts as delivered after 10 calendar days. Deadlines run from that day, including the 180 days to take the oath.
You have been granted citizenship: what comes next
You have 180 days from the notification to swear or promise allegiance (jura o promesa) at the Civil Registry or before a notary. If you do not, the grant lapses.

Common problems and how to fix them
«I cannot find my application number»
Without it you cannot use the status check. Ask the Ministry of Justice citizen helpline: phone 91 837 22 95, Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings.
«It says my details are not correct»
Check your NIE with all its letters, your date of birth, and that the number and year are those of your application. Type the number as in the example on the screen.
«It has been over a year and nothing has happened»
Before you appeal, look in DEHú, including «Notificaciones realizadas»: you may have received a request for documents without noticing.
«I cannot find the notification in DEHú»
After 10 days it is no longer under «Pendientes»: look under «Realizadas». Search month by month, because with more than 30 days between «Fecha Desde» (from) and «Fecha Hasta» (to) nothing shows up. If DEHú gives an error when you log in, try another browser.
«They have asked me for documents»
Hand them in as the request says and before the deadline ends. Online, you do it in the same application on the Ministry of Justice e-office where applications are filed, with Cl@ve or a digital certificate.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a lawyer or gestor to follow my application?
No. You use the status check and DEHú yourself, and both are free. A lawyer can help if you want to appeal: see when it is worth it.
Who receives the notification if I have a representative?
The person you named as recipient when you applied: yourself or your legal or voluntary representative.
Will I also be notified if I am refused?
Yes. A refusal is also notified to you and states which appeal you can file, the deadline and where to file it.
What if I applied before 15 October 2015?
Those applications follow the old procedure and do not receive electronic notifications. The Civil Registry handling your file notifies you.
